How good are your coding skills?

If you're a coder, like them or not, you've experienced one or more of these exercises/tests, commonly used by employers to assess coding skills. I'd be interested to hear about other techniques for assessing coding skills.

  1. Online coding tests: Online coding tests are a popular method for assessing coding skills. These tests typically involve a series of coding challenges that are designed to measure the candidate's ability to write clean, efficient, and effective code. Some examples of online coding tests include HackerRank, Codility, and CodeSignal.

  2. Live coding exercises: Live coding exercises involve giving the candidate a coding problem to solve on the spot, while being observed by the interviewer. This approach can help assess a candidate's ability to think on their feet and solve problems under pressure.

  3. Take-home coding projects: Take-home coding projects are larger coding assignments that are given to candidates to complete on their own time. This approach can help assess a candidate's ability to work independently, as well as their coding skills and problem-solving abilities.

  4. Pair programming: Pair programming involves working with the candidate in a collaborative coding session. This approach can help assess a candidate's ability to work with others, as well as their coding skills and problem-solving abilities.

  5. Technical interviews: Technical interviews involve asking the candidate a series of technical questions related to their area of expertise. This approach can help assess a candidate's knowledge and understanding of coding concepts and best practices.
